Open-source toolkit from NVIDIA for adding programmable guardrails to LLM-based conversational applications.
Supports five rail types: input, output, dialog, retrieval, and execution rails. Dialog flows are defined in Colang, a purpose-built modeling language for controllable multi-turn conversations. Integrates with LangChain and LangGraph, works with OpenAI, Anthropic, Hugging Face, and NVIDIA NIM models, and can delegate moderation to third-party guardrails such as Llama Guard.
Strengths
- Covers input, output, dialog, retrieval, and execution rails in one toolkit
- Colang enables declarative multi-turn dialog flow control, not just I/O filtering
- Broad LLM provider support plus LangChain/LangGraph integration
- Parallel rail execution reduces latency when multiple rails are configured
Tradeoffs
- Colang is a niche DSL with a real learning curve and ongoing 1.0-to-2.0 churn
- Dialog and moderation rails add extra LLM calls, increasing latency and cost
