Shopify's official MCP servers for store catalog/cart (Storefront) and API/app development (Dev).
Shopify provides official MCP servers: a built-in Storefront MCP exposed at each store's /api/mcp endpoint (catalog search, cart management, policies and FAQs) and a Dev MCP for building against Shopify APIs and documentation. The Storefront server is hosted by Shopify on every store; the Dev MCP is distributed as an npm package run locally. Both target agentic commerce and Shopify app development.
Strengths
- First-party and built into every Shopify store via the /api/mcp endpoint
- Storefront tools cover catalog search, cart, and policy/FAQ lookups
- Separate Dev MCP for app builders and API/doc access
Tradeoffs
- Storefront server is hosted-only — no self-hosting or customization
- Scoped per store: a storefront connection only sees that merchant's data
- Checkout and cart mutations are high-stakes and should be gated
