End-to-end vector search engine that generates, stores, and retrieves embeddings for text and images through a single API.

Marqo is a vector search engine that handles embedding generation, storage, and retrieval out of the box, so no external embeddings are required. It converts documents to vectors at index time using integrated models from sources such as PyTorch, Hugging Face, and OpenAI, with CPU and GPU support. It supports both text and image (multimodal) search and exposes search and indexing through a single API. The vendor now positions Marqo as a commercial AI-native ecommerce search platform, and the Apache-2.0 open-source project is marked deprecated and no longer receiving updates.

Strengths

  • Built-in embedding generation removes the need for a separate embedding pipeline
  • Native multimodal (text and image) search in one engine
  • Single API for indexing and querying lowers integration effort
  • Supports a range of swappable models including ONNX for throughput

Tradeoffs

  • The open-source project is deprecated and no longer maintained
  • Vendor focus has shifted to a commercial ecommerce-search platform
  • Bundled embedding models offer less flexibility than fully decoupled stacks
