Community-maintained multi-agent conversation framework forked from Microsoft's AutoGen.
AG2 (formerly AutoGen) was forked by AutoGen's original creators and volunteers into the ag2ai organization in late 2024 under open governance. It centers on conversational multi-agent patterns, group chats, human-in-the-loop, and code execution, and is model-agnostic. It is distinct from Microsoft Agent Framework, the separate successor Microsoft built by unifying the original AutoGen with Semantic Kernel.
Strengths
- Proven conversational multi-agent patterns inherited from AutoGen
- Open, contribution-based community governance
- Built-in code execution and human-in-the-loop support
- Model-agnostic across major LLM providers
Tradeoffs
- Branding and lineage confusion with AutoGen and Microsoft Agent Framework
- Still pre-1.0 with evolving APIs
- Smaller institutional backing than vendor-led frameworks
